On Cloud Nine

This is the outcome from a quick photo shoot that I did today to celebrate the launch of Pixelbaby.net. I really wanted to kickstart this with something new and fresh and I feel like I've accomplished that with this piece.

I was inspired to use a pink gradient or ombre effect by one of the issues of Lula, which is a magazine filled to the brim with beautiful and contemporary photography that's published here in the UK. I've been trying to hunt down a copy for months now, but haven't had any luck (they're really collectable) but hopefully I will have my hands on one someday, haha. Anywho, I really adore how the colour adds a subtle blushing effect and I think I will definitely have to try adding gradients to more photos and try lots of different colours.

One of the editing techniques that I really love at the moment involves duplicating your photo onto two layers, converting the bottom one to black and white and then turning the opacity down on the top coloured layer. With this effect you can create a light and sometimes glowy look to your images like here for example. I learnt this trick from my photography tutor at college, who said that this effect is very big in fashion photography at the moment, another reason why I love it.

Every now and then I do a close-up self portrait on this section of the face, as part of an long ongoing project into looking at what delicate emotions can be portrayed through the eyes. I believe that the mouth can be very distracting in a photograph, as most smiles captured on camera are fake and can sometimes look shallow. So I like to remove or crop out the mouth and focus on the eyes, it is very difficult to fake an emotion through the eyes well, so every photo I take like this is very genuine and natural. There will hopefully be more photographs from this project coming up soon in the next couple of months, but I'll keep you guys posted.

I had an idea that I could implement some aspects of digital illustration into this image. I'm not sure what exactly at the moment but I think it could be quite interesting. What do you guys think, should I keep this pure and simple as a photograph or should I throw some illustration into the mix to see what happens?
