As much as I love my DSLR, there has been countless times where bringing my Canon 60D is just not practical! Its heavy, chunky and I don't have a case for it so I end up protecting it with a bunch of bundled up canvas bags, which makes it a chore to get it out of my handbag. I hate being discouraged to take beautiful photos by such trivial matters, so I began a quest for a camera that produced professional image quality but was still small and light.
After my first search, I quickly realised that a micro four-thirds camera was the way to go. A micro four-thirds camera has the same size image sensor as DSLRs but takes out their mirror box and pentaprism which allows them to be a lot smaller but retain image quality! I then began looking at Olympus' cameras because I used to own one so I already have an idea of what the user interface is like, which will make getting used to it a lot easier and quicker, allowing more time for photos ;)
It was narrowed down to just two competitors, the Pen EP3 and the OM-D EM-5. The latest Pen came out in the middle of last year and packs 12.3 megapixels, a touch sensitive OLED screen, full HD movie recording and 10 art filters, all for £612.66 on Amazon. The OM-D EM-5 was released the beginning of this year and has 16.1 megapixels, a touch sensitive OLED screen that tilts, full HD movie recording with five-axis image stabilisation and 11 art filters, for £1,149 on Amazon.
Money doesn't matter to me so long as I receive a top quality camera, so after a few hours of watching reviews and comparing the specs of both cameras I believe I am ready to welcome the Olympus OM-D EM-5 into my life! It was a tough competition, but the OM-D EM5 won by a hair! It was the lack of electronic viewfinder that lost it for the Pen EP3, an EVF is a must-have for me as sometimes glare from the sun can hit the screen and I cannot see what on earth that I'm taking a photo of.
Is there a special camera that you have your eye on?
